Pre Nuptial Agreement
There are a lot of jokes out there about the pre nuptial agreement, but these are made and used for a very good reason. We would like to think that everyone we meet is honest, and when we fall in love, that love is all there is to it. Sadly, there are many people out there who value money so much they can fake an entire marriage just to get their hands on a good chunk of it. These agreements are meant to protect someone from that problem, and also to make sure both parties are protected if something very bad goes down in a marriage.
If you have money that you have earned on your own, you should most certainly protect it. There are two different schools of thought on this. One side says that pre a nuptial agreement is insulting and you should never sign one. The other school says that if you have nothing to hide, there should be no reason why you wouldn?t want to sign a pre nuptial agreement. I can certainly understand both sides of thinking. I haven?t thought about it too hard because I doubt I will ever be faced with one.
If you feel the need to have a pre nuptial agreement, you should by all means have one. Your lawyer should be able to advise you on this, and you should strongly consider it if you have a lot of assets to protect. The terms will be up to you. We all want to think love and marriage is forever, but the reality is that many marriages fail. A pre nuptial agreement will protect you from being cleaned out by someone who may be less than honest. You can also find examples online, but you should really have a lawyer draw one up for your particular circumstances.
If you are faced with a pre nuptial agreement, you should also get a lawyer to look it over for you before you sign. You may want to change something, or perhaps add a little something of your own. If you have nothing to hide, you shouldn?t be too surprised or upset by a pre nuptial agreement, and you should understand that it?s not really an insult. However, remember that you don?t have to sign one if you don?t want to, and it will be up to you to decide if you really want to go through with the marriage after all.
