Gambling Addiction
Though you may not understand what a gambling addiction might be, but it is a problem for a lot of people. Though it is not as physically dangerous as a drinking or drug addiction, it can wreck and destroy lives and families rather quickly. It always starts out innocently, but in the end many will find that they just can?t stop, and this continues even when the threat of legal action or jail time is mentioned as a possibility. This is one reason why I have never really gambled, but I have had a touch of this type of addiction.
I worked in a convenience store long ago, and when I got bored I would buy a few lottery tickets. When I would win, I would spend all of that money on more tickets. I would only win twenty dollars or so, but I should have kept it. I just kept buying more. I ended up breaking even, but I should have perhaps thought about what I was doing. This is hardly a gambling addiction, but it was something that helped me understand how easily something like that could get out of control. Quite often a gambling addiction starts off with something as simple as what I was doing.
Those with a gambling addiction cannot stop. They may have big winnings at some point, but they always keep going until they have lost everything. No matter how much they get, they know they can do better. It?s not even really about the money. A gambling addiction can turn a bad corner eventually, and some lose their homes and the respect of their families. Many families faced with financial ruin from an addiction won?t last.
There is help out there for those with a gambling addiction, but they may not even know they need it. Some who have lost everything and have had to rebuild their lives can fall right back into the trap. They will self-destruct over and over again. Some of them end up stealing money from their employers or friends and family to feed their gambling addiction, and in the end that can lead to time in jail. Even then they may not be cured. There is professional help out there, and if you suspect you or someone you love has a gambling addiction run for help as soon as possible. It?s never too late to turn it around, but you do have to admit you need help before you can do that.
