When I bought a notebook computer, it represented a major investment for me. Not only did it cost a pretty penny, but it also was the first time that I had actually trusted myself enough to take something that valuable and that fragile out with me. I bought it so that I could go and work in coffee shops, since it seemed like a great way to increase my productivity by allowing me to work when I was on the go.
Nonetheless, there was one factor that I hadn't thought of. I bought the best laptop case that money could buy to take care of it. I never left my table unattended, and always watched over my laptop. The laptop cases sides were lined with high-tech foam to prevent it from getting any damage from minor knocks. It had two combination locks, one on either side of the latch. I considered everything that could happen to my system except for one thing: theft.
I had always made fun of one of my friends for having a computer backpack instead of a laptop hard case. To me, computer backpacks seemed like an accident waiting to happen. Not only did the laptop backpack look unprofessional and sophomoric, but your average computer backpack was not nearly so well protected as a laptop case. Computer backpacks, you see, are an accident waiting to happen.. They have space for books and other possessions, as well at the dedicated compartment for the laptop computer. It seemed like an easy way to make a mistake and accidentally crush your computer.
What I didn't think about was how inconspicuous a computer backpack was when compared with the laptop case. It was true that I watched my notebook case with great diligence, but nonetheless thieves were watching me as well. Had I had a computer backpack, it would have been difficult to steal. I would have kept the computer backpack strapped to my back when I was not working on my writing, and I would have blended in with all of the students who live in the town where I live. The laptop suitcase, however, ended up proving too attractive a target for thieves. One time, it was snatched right out of my hand while I was walking home from work. I chased the villain, but he had a cohort who bumped into me, giving him time to escape. If I had had that computer backpack, I would still have my laptop PC today.
