Laundry basket

I have discovered a wonderful way to entertain my three year old. If I'm doing laundry, she drags the laundry basket out of the closet and insists on helping me. Her idea of helping me though consists of making the laundry basket vanish into thin air just as I need to use it to take laundry out of the dryer. In her opinion, a laundry basket makes an excellent toy.

She has invented many games to play with the laundry basket. She'll climb into it and pretend it is a car or a boat. On really hyper days, it suddenly turns into Thomas the Tank Engine and things get really loud in my household. She uses the laundry basket for putting toys in for moving easily around the house without having to make more trips than necessary and cut into her playtime. When my husband arrives home and I still haven't managed to reclaim the laundry basket, it becomes a basketball hoop for them. Anything you can think of gets tossed into it.

After fighting a battle to keep the laundry basket for it's true purposes, I decided to surrender and simply purchase more laundry baskets. We now have three in our household. My favorite has become the tall and skinny laundry basket that our daughter cannot climb into on her own. Due to that fact, she has rejected that laundry basket as an enjoyable toy allowing me to do the laundry in peace. However, the really sturdy Rubbermaid laundry basket has become her new favorite toy. It holds quite a bit of laundry and toys so we occasionally do find ourselves battling over it. She usually wins, leaving me to retreat to my smaller laundry basket and making extra trips. I tell myself that I need the exercise and to not complain. It is almost impossible to do battle with a strong-willed three year old who looks so adorable begging you to release your grip on the handle.

Personally, I have grown to love and appreciate the laundry baskets that have sturdy handles. The older style laundry baskets simply don't offer them and although it seems menial, the handles really can be convenient. Some brands have handles but they seem to break too easily and quickly. I hate to be picky about a laundry basket, but if I have to do the nonstop chore of washing clothes, I want to have the proper support. My daughter loves the handles as well. She has discovered that her legs can fit through them very well and if she screams loud enough, I will come running to rescue her. This is yet another way that she has found for laundry basket to be incredibly entertaining. All I can do is smile.
