Despite all of that gets tough rhetoric, anyone in business will tell you that mandatory drug tests are at best a necessary evil. Although drug testing is mandated by the political climate, in many ways it just doesn't make sense. Simply put, as a business owner the only thing that should be important to you is whether or not your employees are getting the job done. If they are using illegal drugs off the job, as long as it doesn't affect their performance at work there is no reason for it to be your concern. The fact is that heavy drinkers people with a high rate of burnout and emotional, physical, and psychological problems, don't get caught by a drug test. People who are using comparatively harmless drugs like marijuana, however, often do.
The problem is that, with the current anti drug hysteria in government and in some parts of the civilian sector, drug urine tests are almost necessary for a wide variety of fields. If you hire teachers who work with children or who use heavy equipment, it will be very difficult for you to avoid having to have random drug tests. The chances are that your insurance will probably require it, so there's nothing you can do about it. The ironic thing about it is that the really hard-core drug users know how to pass drug tests. There are a million different tricks that work, and as long as you are serious about not getting caught, you can get away with using heavy drugs for years at a time. It is the casually users the people who smoke a joint every now and then who get caught.
This is why it is important to make your drug testing policy as liberal as possible. It is not that you want to encourage drug use among employees, but that you want them to get the message that you are serious about creating a competitive business environment. Health checkups, drug tests, and other newfangled nonsense create the wrong business impression. They tell your employees that they will be rewarded for maintaining what is considered a healthy lifestyle and punished for indiscretions outside of the workplace. In reality, what you need to tell them is that the only thing that matters is their performance on the job. That is the way to get the best results. It will increase your business productivity and ensure that your employees stay happy.
