Internet Crime

The Internet is wonderful for many things, but there is also a lot of Internet crime out there that you have to watch out for. There was a time when people would call you on the phone to try to scam you, but they have left that behind to send you emails and offers meant to rip you off. Its easier than ever for them now, and even though you may be smart enough to avoid the scams and the rip off artists, there are many people who fall for them every single day.

Internet crime is definitely on the rise, and it is harder for authorities to track down and prosecute these people. When you are dealing with the Internet, you are dealing with the world, not just your own country. There is a lot of Internet crime coming out of countries like Nigeria, and there is not a lot people can do about it. It is much harder to launch and investigation on a global scale. When the crime is committed online, it makes it even harder to get to the source and come to a resolution for those who were victimized.

The most common Internet crime might be password theft. If you have never gotten one of these emails, you probably soon will. They say you either won some lottery you never entered, or that a prince needs your help to get to his familys wealth, or some other silly story. These are never real. You didnt win any money, and you arent going to get any money by helping someone launder money. This is all Internet crime and you arent going to get anything out of it except perhaps an empty bank account and ruined credit.

Another type of common Internet crime is the email that warns you that your online account has been compromised. The email might look like it comes from Paypal or your bank, but I assure you it does not. They have a link for you to click, and once you click it and enter your information you have just given criminals the keys to your money. If you get an email like this, you should know it is Internet crime and you should ignore it or report it. If there is any doubt in your mind, pick up your phone and call your bank or whoever it is the email is claiming to be. If there is a problem they will tell you over the phone but never in email. Make sure you use a number you look up yourself, and never use one provided to you.
