Most of us are looking for ways to get more room in our homes. The quick accumulation of toys for the kids and having a large space for entertaining are some basic reasons for finishing a basement. Often people will take on the project of finishing a basement for an additional bedroom to accommodate a growing family. Basement floor coverings are one of the most important decisions that you will have to make when delving into this undertaking.

Looking to the basement is a practical first step. Although remodeling a basement can be quite a task it is a much cheaper way to expand your home without adding on an addition. There are many questions you will want to ask before you decide what kind of basement floor coverings will suit you best.

The first question in determining which type of basement floor coverings to choose is if you tend to have any moisture issues in your basement. If you continually have water seeping in you will want to try to correct the area before you even consider which covering you want.

The second question is how old your house is. Older homes tend to have slab floors without any insulation under it. Your basement floor coverings will have to be able to contend with the moisture issues. There are products available that help keep moisture at bay.

If you find that you do have water issues, look into a sump pump or other drainage options. Be sure to inspect the foundation itself for larger problems. Once you?ve determined any water issues are either resolved or minimized you can then look into the type of floor you have in your basement.

If you do not have insulation under the slab you will want to consider a vapor barrier or soundless cork for your basement floor coverings. You need to keep head room in mind with the barrier options. You could lose 2 to 3 inches with over-padding.

The final question is what kind of space you want to create in your basement. Game rooms vary from a bedroom area regarding flooring. Once you?ve properly set up the area, you can now choose the type of basement floor coverings for the room.

Ceramic tiling is geared more for walls than floors. Using glazed, mosaic or quarry tiles are the better option. Antimicrobial carpets are a very good choice if you want rugs. Indoor/outdoor carpets are easily sanitized but are not very comfortable to the touch.

With all of this in mind there are several basement floor coverings to choose from. It becomes a matter of taste and utility merging together.
