As implied by the name, a dollar store is a store where everything costs just one dollar. These stores are found all over the country and there are several such chains operating under different names. If you want to be a smart shopper, you should acquaint yourself with your local dollar store. Once you have, you'll probably want to make a weekly stop to catch some great bargains.

Dollar stores receive their stocks from grocers who are closing business, manufacturer overstocks and like situations. Stock in this type of store turns over quickly, and you may not find the same items or brands each week.

The dollar store concept works much like the dry-goods store of the early 1900's. You won't find fresh produce, meat or dairy products in dollar stores.

Certain goods like dry pasta and juices may not be there the day you visit. Selections of condiments and preserves may be sporadic and may change from week to week. Nonetheless, you can save a bundle by shopping the dollar stores weekly, picking up bargains as they appear in stock.

There are, generally, a similar collection of products you'll see each time you shop. For example, dollar stores always have toothpaste, shampoos and conditioners, soap, makeup and many other toiletries. Other consistent categories of products you'll find include canned goods in varying selections, cleaning products, school supplies, food containers, plastic wrap, paper towels and toilet tissue, kitchen gadgets, candy, toys and gift wrapping.

When you make your weekly shopping list, remember the dollar stores for household items like dish soap, toothpaste, razors, cleaning agents and aluminum foil. You'll pay far more at the grocers. If you're a disciplined shopper, a visit to a dollar store can be a boon to your household budget.

The dollar stores have amazing bargains at the checkout stands. Look for phone calling cards with 35 minutes to anywhere in the U.S. for only a buck! Super glue packs of two or three tubes can be found, again for just a dollar.

Reading glasses and sunglasses are a big seller at the dollar stores. Why pay $9.95 for a pair of reading glasses that you can get at the dollar stores for $1? You'll find a full spectrum of sunglass styles, all discounted to one dollar.

One area of tempting products that are always on hand are dozens of different cute ceramic figurines, vases and knick-knacks, often geared to the season. These items are usually displayed at the front of the store.

You'll find some terrific gift items here, but if your intent is to save money, don't linger long in these aisles, because you're sure to find something irresistible.

All things considered, the dollar stores are fun places to browse and you can save a lot of money when shopping.
