Music Stores
There is a time that I dread, and there are words that always bring on this sense of dread like no other. Its when my husband looks at me in the car and says, Oh, we have to stop at the music store. I know not everyone has this feeling about a store, but for some reason, I know this means that I need to cancel whatever it is I was planning on doing for the rest of the day. I know that I am going to be in that store for hours. My husband enters with the purpose of getting guitar strings, and ends up in there for hours. He does it when we are in the car because he knows I have no choice but to go along. Its not fair I tell you, I spare him the trips to Victorias Secret!
Music stores are online everywhere, and it is easier than ever to find what you want online. These items can be shipped to your home, and you never have to leave the house. This seems great in theory, but if you live with or are married to a musician, you know that there is just something about music stores that draws them in. The experience of shopping online for musical needs leaves them feeling somewhat cheated. For this reason, I think the music stores in your community will always be there no matter what.
If you dont understand this, then just find someone in a band, and ask him or her if you can go to music stores with them. Give them a time limit of about a half an hour. Tell them you have a pressing appointment. I guarantee you miss that appointment. Your friend will be lost in the aisles of musical equipment. If this person is a guitar player, get ready to hear them play. I dont think I have ever gone into music stores with any guitar player where they didnt play at least three different guitars that they had no intention of buying that day. They just have to keep their options open, dont you know.
You may not have much better luck with anyone else either. Musicians gather at music stores, and they get into long conversations about things that may not make sense to you. Take my advice. Make sure you are the one holding the car keys, and be prepared to go find something else to do. If you have an appointment, you are going to have to go on your own. They cant help it; its like a candy store to them. I just wish hed tell me before hand so I could opt out of going. Its only fair right? Im not telling him he cant go.
