It is sad to say in this day and age, but more and more people feel the need to buy bullet proof vests. Personally, I have never worn a bullet proof vest until a couple months ago. That is when tragedy struck, and I changed my mind. I went out and got a Kevlar vest the very next day, and I have been wearing it ever since. I would rather not have to wear Kevlar bulletproof vests and worry about my safety, but there it is ? the world is changing.
I have seen the news shots of soldiers in Iraq buying body armor and bullet proof vests to go into some of the hotter zones in the country. Apparently, our government doesn't supply an adequate bulletproof vest to the soldiers, so they have to buy their own. Although it is sad to see in Iraq, it seems even more tragic here. It seems like only yesterday I felt safe going down my block. Then suddenly, there was a drive-by shooting out of nowhere. No one knows exactly who was targeting who, but I don't think the intended target was there. No one was killed, but several people were injured. The very next day, I went out looking for a police bullet proof vest.
The worst thing about it is that the police act as if it is our fault. They believe that everyone in the neighborhood is responsible for the killings that have been going on, and that we are not telling them who did it for fear of retribution. The truth is, however, that many of us ? if not most of us ? do not know. All I know is that I don't feel safe outside without a bullet proof vest nowadays. As a matter of fact, I feel like I am wearing my bullet proof vest even more frequently than when I was in the Army. Even with the vest bulletproof, I don't feel particularly safe. After all, it is possible to get shot in the head isn't it?
Nonetheless, my second chance bullet proof vest makes me feel a little bit safer than I would otherwise. I'm even tempted to show other people what I have, but I have decided against it. You see, half of the value of the bullet proof vest is the fact that no one knows that I am wearing it. If they shoot me, I can play dead until they go away. If someone who tries to kill me knows I'm wearing a bullet proof vest, they will probably just shoot me in the head.
