I have been a fan of NCAA basketball for about 10 years now. I especially like the Michigan State basketball program. As a matter of fact, I like all Spartan sports, but the basketball program is my favorite. Nonetheless, I was shy about showing my true school spirit. I never wore a college basketball jersey, even when I was enrolled at Michigan State. I had always thought that college basketball jerseys, green and white face paint, and other signs of school spirit were kind of silly and ridiculous. I never even war College basketball hats. I certainly wasn't about to spend my hard-earned money on a college basketball jersey when I have better things to wear. It seemed like a waste to me.
I would look at all the fans in the stands wearing college basketball jerseys, and feel quite separated from them. When I was at the game, I felt all alone. My friends tried to get me to wear their college basketball jerseys. One of my best friends even gave me one as a present, in the hopes that I would wear it. Finally, I took him up on it. I figured that, even if it was silly, it would make me feel more a part of the game. I knew that I wasn't a member of the team, and that when the Spartan basketball team won, it did not mean that ?we? won. Nonetheless, it seemed like it might be fun to play make-believe with the rest of the sports fans. It turns out that it was much more fun than I had imagined.
One of the first things that surprised me about wearing college basketball jerseys is the fact that I didn't feel absolutely ridiculous in it. This was definitely against my expectations. I had always thought that college basketball jersey looked silly. Sports were a fun recreational activity, but the idea of having professional sports have never made any sense to me. Why would you want a shirt that advertises a team? Still, wearing college basketball jerseys when you are in a crowd of people who are doing the same thing seemed alright to me. People would even come up to me and start conversations simply because we were both wearing college basketball merchandise from the same team. Although it seemed like a silly reason to make friends, nonetheless it was nice to be making new friends.
