I have a lot of toys around the house and thats pretty much a given because there is a toddler living here. But sometimes even when we surround the child with the latest and greatest new toys made especially for kids in his age group, his favorite toys are actually the toys he steals from me. For my last birthday I received several pieces of napoleon dynamite merchandise as gifts. I got a birthday card, a tee shirt printed with the slogan Vote for Pedro, a napoleon dynamite pen and a talking doll that talks about things from the movie like tater tots and ligers.

I like the toys and theyre amusing, but my son is drawn to them like metal to a magnet. His favorite piece of napoleon dynamite merchandise is the talking doll. When I first received it he pulled it off the counter and walked around with it, staring at its face and pressing the belly to make it talk. He especially likes it when napoleon exclaims Whattayou think??? in his classic impatient dialect that relays complete frustration and annoyance with another person. My son repeatedly pushes the belly to rotate through the other phrases until the obnoxious exclamation he loves most comes up and then he giggles and stares at the doll in delight as though it is telling him the secret to happiness.

Now, I only have one young child, so Im definitely not an expert at this parenting thing yet, but Im reasonably confident that the makers of napoleon dynamite merchandise were not intending toddlers as their number one focus market. Im assuming I am not even in their marketing range, as I am an adult and should be over silly things like napoleon dynamite by now. However, both my toddler and I find delight in napoleon dynamite merchandise and I guess its not a bad thing that the stuff is flexible enough to be enjoyed by kids of all ages, not just teenagersthe people who I am sure were the initial intended market for the products.

And now Im left wondering if this is just the gentle beginning to a coming decade of having obnoxious toys in my house. Maybe my son will also enjoy whoopee cushions and toys based on Japanese animated shows. These are things I dont enjoy, probably because I dont understand them, and I cringe when I think about being surrounded in my own home by a bunch of stuff that I hate. But Im getting ahead of myself here. The kid isnt even two yet and Im already thinking of how hes going to torture me when hes five. At least we can both agree that napoleon dynamite merchandise is cool, even though it is supremely annoying. And leave it at that for now.
