Woman Magazines

Over the years, magazines have changed. They have become more daring and risqu. Woman magazines used to print recipes and knitting patterns. There would be tips on housekeeping and general advice on running a home and keeping the husband contented. How things have changed. These sorts of articles have given way to tips for the bedroom, how to get ahead in the office and questionnaires on subjects which would shock our grandparents.

Once, there were sweet fictional stories about Victorian families who ran textile mills and had disputes with the workers. It would be a saga which would end with the favorite daughter marrying a local clergyman. Now, the fiction in woman magazines is more likely to be a love triangle, involving an unsavory type who is imprisoned for insider trading.

My favorite item is the Problems Page. I'm not sure if they make the letters up or not. They're the most entertaining bit of woman magazines, either way. There's always a letter from a young woman who wants to know if she should dump her boyfriend because he's kissed her best friend or hinted that she's fat. Then there's the letter from the married woman who's worried her husband is having an affair because he's started wearing after shave.

The other entertaining page is the Horoscopes Page. Woman magazines always have these. People who say they don't believe in astrology still read their horoscope. There's something compelling about it. My horoscope usually tells me some vague nonsense which I completely forget a few seconds after I've read it. I keep reading it every week anyway.

Sometimes, I have to admit, there are recipes in woman magazines. They often cater to the woman who doesn't have time to cook and needs a recipe for a quick, five minute souffl. How to get kids to eat healthily is another obsession, or ideas for themed party food. Many people can't boil an egg properly but they know how to make a pirate ship out of pasta shells.

In fact many magazine articles are about how to do things in a rush. How to shop, decorate, and throw a dinner party in a rush. How to create a garden out of a back yard in, you guessed it, an entire weekend. In this stressful world, woman magazines should be teaching us how to slow down. How to cook slowly, smell the roses and be wafted away in a mist of Yoga. They could give away those CDs of chill music. Now, that would be worth buying before it lined the cat's litter tray.
