I have always found a perverse joy in writing bad fiction. You see, I take my own writing so seriously that it is helpful to have some kind of outlet. I used to love to write the most atrocious poetry that you can imagine. Most of the poetry that people rights is bad, but mine was terrible. Then one day, I realized that I could take my penchant for bad writing and make a career out of it. That is when I started writing harlequin books.
Although I had some doubts when I began, I am now convinced that there is no one on this earth who thinks that harlequin romance novels are well written. Even the racy scenes are terribly boring and dull. For a while, I was actually very unsuccessful with my harlequin novels. You see, I had set out to make fun of the genre, but I didn't even understand it. I had no idea why harlequin books appealed to people. I figured that the readers were actually just stupid. They are not stupid. The harlequin books are simply a romantic escapist fantasy for women. They allow them to get away from the mundane realities of their own relationships. Once I understood this, I managed to write a successful harlequin book.
It was actually not a very traditional harlequin book. The writing was rather standard, and the setting was rather ordinary, but the way it was published was radically different. I was working for an online harlequin books publisher, you see. People could pay a subscription fee, and they would get several harlequin books chapter every week. It was a really good deal for the readers. It worked because of the fact that the books were so easy to turn out, and that so many people wanted to read them.
Unfortunately, my early harlequin books all belong to that company now. I have seen very few royalties from them. But the good thing is that I used them to get a fan base. People wanted to see more of my writing. I really understood how to write harlequin books, and it showed. Now, I have started off writing for myself. I don't begrudge my early publisher the first few books that I wrote. It gave him a chance to make some money, and me a chance to start a career. I think everyone is happy with the arrangement. I know that I am just thrilled to be making money writing, even if I have to write trash.
